What will you see on the Danube cruise in Budapest?

The Danube splits Budapest into Buda and Pest — and from the boat you see both sides in their full glory. On the tour you’ll pass:

  • Margaret Bridge — with the green Margaret Island
  • Buda Castle — perched on the hilltop above the river
  • Gellért Hill with the Liberty Statue
  • Gellért Baths — one of the world’s most famous thermal spas
  • Vigadó Concert Hall — Budapest’s elegant riverside concert venue
  • Hungarian Parliament — the absolute photo highlight, even more impressive from the water
  • Várkert Bazár — the beautifully restored Royal Garden Bazaar
  • Chain Bridge — Budapest’s most famous bridge, built in 1849 as the first permanent link between Buda and Pest

The boat passes under several bridges, giving you fresh perspectives on the city from both directions.

Jetty: Where do Budapest boat tours start?

Meeting point for our favourite tour: Dock 42, approx. 800 metres north of Margaret Bridge. Easy to find on Google Maps or any navigation app — just search for “Dock 42” or “Portum Lines”. Don’t rely on the postcode alone.

Most other tours depart from central jetties along the Danube embankment, easily reachable by metro, taxi or on foot from most city centre hotels.

Important: Arrive at least 15 minutes before departure — seating is first come, first served, and a good spot on the open deck is worth getting there early for.

That depends on the tour. Most sightseeing tours last 60 to 70 minutes — just right to see all the highlights without taking up too much of your day. Dinner cruises run for 2.5 hours.

Danube cruise in Budapest: Evening tour or daytime – which is better?

Evening tour: When Budapest switches on its lights at dusk, it’s simply magical. The Parliament glows golden, the bridges light up — a dream for photographers. Evening tours are our clear favourite.

Daytime tour: If you want great photos in natural light or want to see the colours of the buildings at their best, daytime is the better choice. It’s also generally less busy.

Especially great with kids. From €26 per person, 1.5 hours, rating: 4.2/5 (191 reviews).

Practical tips for your Budapest boat tour

  • Book early: Evening tours sell out days in advance — especially in high season (April–October) and at weekends.
  • Arrive on time: At least 15 minutes before departure for the best spots on the open deck.
  • Bring a jacket: It can get noticeably cooler on the water in the evenings, even in summer.
  • Bring your camera: The view of the Parliament at night is too good to miss.
  • Food and drinks: Usually not allowed to bring your own — most boats have a bar on board.
